Stop faking it in business relationships
"It's not what you know, it's who you know." We've all heard this countless times. But I've come to believe it's not even about who you know—it's about how well you know them and the depth of those connections.
Over the years, I've watched authentic relationships transform businesses, careers, and lives. It's never been about collecting the most LinkedIn connections or having the biggest rolodex (though I do have quite a list!). The real magic happens when we foster genuine relationships that go beyond surface-level networking.
So let's dig into why these authentic connections matter and how they can yield unexpected returns. Trust me, the results might surprise you.
The Numbers Tell Part of the Story
While the true value of authentic connections often lies in intangible benefits, research does provide some compelling evidence of their impact on our professional lives.
A landmark study by Sun Microsystems tracked the career progress of nearly 1,000 employees over a 5-year period. The results were striking: employees who had mentors were promoted five times more often than those without mentors. This wasn't just a slight edge – it was a dramatic difference that highlighted the power of having strong, supportive relationships in the workplace.
Similarly, Gallup's extensive research into employee engagement revealed a surprising factor in workplace satisfaction and productivity. They found that having a best friend at work led to engagement levels seven times higher than those without close work relationships. This translated to tangible benefits for both employees and employers, including increased productivity, better customer service, and higher retention rates.
These studies underscore a critical point: our professional relationships don't just make work more enjoyable – they fundamentally shape our career trajectories and the success of our organizations. But as compelling as these numbers are, they only hint at the full potential of authentic connections in our professional lives.
Beyond the Metrics
The true power of authentic relationships lies in their intangible benefits. These are the aspects that don't fit neatly into spreadsheets or quarterly reports, yet they fundamentally shape our experiences and outcomes.
- Emotional Support: When you're facing a tough decision or a setback, having someone who truly gets it can make all the difference. I've had moments where a quick call with a trusted colleague provided the clarity I needed to move forward.
- Serendipitous Opportunities: Some of our biggest breakthroughs at Plain Sight Ventures came from casual conversations with connections. You never know when a chat over coffee might spark your next big idea.
- Trust and Innovation: When people feel psychologically safe, they're more likely to share those "crazy" ideas that just might change everything. I've seen teams transform when members feel truly connected and supported.
- Diverse Perspectives: A network of authentic connections often means access to a variety of viewpoints. This diversity of thought can be invaluable when tackling complex problems or exploring new opportunities.
- Personal Growth: Genuine relationships challenge us to see things from new angles. They push us out of our comfort zones and help us grow not just professionally, but personally.
Nurturing Real Connections
Building and maintaining authentic bonds requires intention and effort. Here are some strategies I've found effective:
- Focus on deepening a few key relationships rather than trying to connect with everyone.
- Give people your full attention during interactions. Put away distractions and truly listen.
- Follow up after meetings with personalized messages that reference specific conversation points.
- Look for opportunities to add value to your connections without expecting immediate returns.
- Use technology to help remember important details and stay in touch, but never as a replacement for genuine human interaction. (Check out Quin ;) )
- Share your own vulnerabilities and challenges. It opens the door for deeper, more meaningful exchanges.
- Celebrate your connections' successes as enthusiastically as you would your own.
- Be consistent in your outreach. Regular check-ins, even if brief, help maintain and strengthen relationships over time.
The Ripple Effect
When we prioritize authentic connections, it creates a ripple effect that extends far beyond individual relationships. Our approach to work changes. We start seeing colleagues, clients, and partners as whole people, not just roles or resources. This shift in perspective can reshape entire organizations, leading to more empathetic leadership, stronger team dynamics, and ultimately, better business outcomes.
The Long View
Building genuine relationships isn't about quick wins or immediate ROI. It's a long-term investment, but one that pays dividends throughout your career and life. As work scales, the ability to form authentic connections may become more difficult, which is what makes it even more valuable.
Here's a challenge for you: This week, reach out to one connection with the sole intent of deepening that relationship. No agenda, no ask – just a genuine desire to connect.
I'm curious – what's been your experience with building deeper professional relationships? Have you had a moment where an authentic connection led to an unexpected opportunity or insight?
